Founded by Nicolás de Ovando in 1502, receiving its coat of arms in 1508, this province currently consists of nine municipalities: San Felipe de Puerto Plata, Altamira, Guananico, Imbert, Luperón, Los Hidalgos, Villa Montellano, Sosúa and Villa Isabela.

Villa Montellano, where the Punta Bergantín Project, It has its roots in the sugar mill, since in 1880 a mill was installed and in 1914 the Bentz brothers transformed it into a sugar cane plantation, attracting migrants and changing the local economy.

The reef that borders the coast of Bergantín is in a significant state of degradation due to indiscriminate fishing, sedimentation and the scarcity of the Diadema antillarum sea urchin, affecting its health.
