PUERTO PLATA.- The Punta Bergantín project obtained certification from the Center for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE) after passing its program to develop as a sustainable tourist complex with more than 90 points.
The governance, society and environment indicators that make up its sustainability proposal were classified as a “Sustainability Practitioners” initiative.
The project's sustainability proposal was audited and evaluated by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) through the Center for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE), which has a history of more than 5,000 training courses on sustainability and sustainable development provided to professionals from different industries globally.
The sustainability approach considers essential aspects such as energy efficiency, waste management, community engagement initiatives, corporate social responsibility, work ethics and measures to prevent the effects of climate change.
The proposal was presented by Leonela Vólquez, Director of Community, Sustainability and Research, and Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez Redondo, Sustainability Manager of the project, who also obtained accreditation as sustainability professionals.
Comprehensive development and ecological revitalization
Punta Bergantín aims to create a new tourism dynamic in the province of Puerto Plata, turning this corner into an internationally renowned destination with comprehensive development, cutting-edge facilities, environmental sustainability and inclusion of the Monte Llano community. The project is promoted by a trust headed by the Banco de Reservas.
The Martinón Group has signed an agreement to participate in the project with a hotel from the Hyatt “Inclusive Collection” brand; a Meliá has also joined, a joint investment by Meliá International Hotels and the Puntacana Group, as well as a Hilton and a Marriott.
The project occupies an area of 10 million square meters, surrounded by an environment of great beauty. Its master plan preserves natural beauty, with low urban density, combining hotels, recreational areas, horizontal and vertical housing, and promoting a first-class real estate and tourist destination.
The project will implement an assisted ecological revitalization plan with marine nurseries, restoration of corals and bird species to restore the ecosystem. In addition, wetland areas will be improved to increase their biodiversity. This includes planting native flora and fauna, creating trails and viewing points, and beautifying the landscape with native gardens.
The wetlands will be preserved to protect the complex from flooding and extreme weather events, while offering scenic attractions for tourists and residents. The plan also includes the restoration of the reef that borders the coast, which is in a state of degradation due to indiscriminate fishing, sedimentation and the scarcity of sea urchins. This ecosystem is vital to protect the coast and promote tourism.
This project is designed to attract a diverse range of private investment and will include, in addition to hotel and residential development, an 18-hole golf course, an academic campus aimed at promoting education and innovation, a film studio and adequate road infrastructure.
Punta Bergantin is an initiative of the Dominican government, structured with the economic and professional support of the Reservas Group.
