PUERTO PLATA.– With the aim of promoting a more conscious tourism development model connected to its environment, the Punta Bergantín project is developing a nursery of native and endemic species that will contribute to the rehabilitation and preservation of the natural heritage that distinguishes the northern part of the country.

The initiative is being developed in collaboration with the Puerto Plata Provincial Directorate of the Environment and the Santiago de los Caballeros Botanical Garden. Thanks to this joint effort, the project includes the initial addition of 355 specimens of threatened species and the planting of 1,260 native trees, strengthening conservation and ecological restoration efforts in the area.
Leonela Vólquez, Director of Community, Sustainability and Research for the project, explained that the Punta Bergantín nursery represents a long-term investment and a living foundation for regenerating landscapes, protecting species, promoting environmental education, and supporting the growth of the North Coast as a destination where nature is not an add-on, but an essential part of its identity.

He also noted that this initiative will be an essential piece to sustain the environmental vision of Punta Bergantín and ensure that its growth is accompanied by concrete actions for the conservation, restoration and protection of natural resources.

“This space will promote the production of native and endemic species. Its importance lies not only in what is planted, but in what it will allow us to build: a more conscious, resilient tourism development model connected to its environment,” he added.

Additionally, 11 species from the red list of endangered or critically endangered species have been selected and collected, which will be housed during the first year of operation of the nursery.

Furthermore, this nursery represents the operational component of the Environmental Management Plan and the Tree Transplanting, Compensation and Reforestation Plan for Punta Bergantín, instruments that guide the sustainability and environmental protection actions of the project
